It seems to me that the gender issue itself is peripheral to the debate: a similar observation could have been made if it was a differently defined group of people that had benefited from commodification.

The main point is, I think, around establishing the terms of the trade-off, and if it is found that the sacrifice is too high compared to the gain, how to intervene with as little force as possible (and hence minimum collateral damage) to rebalance it.
