On further reflection, ISTM that the Village Venus effect is really a case of bounded rationality: if only you were aware of the beauties of other villages you might think different. It’s not really a cognitive bias – there is no distortion. WYSIATI, OTOH, really distorts reality in your perception: you think there is a lot of crime simply because you’ve seen two reports of a mugging a this month, and no reports of people not being mugged. Base rate fallacy could also be said to apply here.
